Capital Refractories Group completes acquisition of “XeraCarb” Limited – a specialist Silicon Carbide composite ceramics manufacturer

CRL Group are pleased to announce that “XeraCarb Limited”, a specialist silicon carbide composite ceramics manufacturer, located in Barnsley, UK, has been acquired with effect of 1st February 2017 and will be trading as XeraCarb, a division of Capital Refractories Limited, within the CRL Group.

XeraCarb was founded in 2011 exploiting their developed and proprietary sialon ceramic composite materials. These materials, developed in conjunction with Sheffield Hallam University, are now being used by a number of leading companies as ceramic kiln furniture, aluminium thermocouple sheaths, burner nozzles and wear resistant parts.

In addition, XeraCarb manufactures a range of innovative high performance silicon carbide composite ceramics for use in a number of applications including body and vehicle armour, kiln furniture, molten aluminium and zinc contact zones and a range of technical engineering applications.

Mr James Newsome, Managing Director of CRL Group, issued the following statement “I am delighted to announce Capital’s acquisition of XeraCarb Limited, a spin out from Sheffield Hallam University, that developed a technology for producing high strength Sialon-bonded Silicon Carbide ceramics with proven success in a wide range of applications. The XeraCarb materials and technology augments our existing portfolio of materials including alumina, silica, magnesia and zirconia and our technical ceramic processes including vibro-casting, freeze casting, slip-casting, hydraulic pressing, iso-static pressing and injection moulding. This acquisition strengthens, and further diversifies, CRL Group’s technical ceramics businesses and offers our customers a wider choice of solutions”.

Mr Nigel Robson, Director of Sales, further added “this is a very exciting venture for Capital, it leads us into a new range of technical ceramics sales and opens up interesting, and new markets, from armour and wear parts to kiln furniture and aluminium, it’s a diverse range and one that we will relish taking on board, we look forward to the challenge”.
